As a photographer, I am always looking for amazing locations around the area! One of the most beautiful and scenic parks in the area has got to be Historic Oak View Park. With it’s wide open spaces, walking trails, ponds, historic buildings, small vineyard and cotton field it’s got something for everyone! This is one of the best parks in the area to take your family for a day out!
Historic Oak View County Park is a historic site, beginning in the 19th century as a plantation. The park’s property contains historic farm buildings. These showcase the transition of the land from a plantation to sharecropping and tenant farming. The park offers free guided tours or you can do a self-guided tour as well!
The buildings onsite include:
Other than the historic buildings, the park also has a visitor center which is also the Farm History Center. When you park and arrive, be sure to stop in for additional information about the site! They also have clean restrooms inside! The Farm History Center also includes the Farmer’s Corner, which is an interactive area for kids to learn about farming in a fun way!
Beyond the fun at the Farmer’s Corner, there is also plenty of other things to do at the park. The park includes 2 large picnic shelters and hiking trails. There are also 2 ponds located on the property, where freshwater fishing is permitted with a valid fishing license.
One of the best things to do at the park is visit the goats and the chickens! The chickens are beside the Tenant House and the goats are behind the Tenant House (unless it’s raining, then they can be found in the barn). There are currently 4 goats at the park and they love to welcome visitors!
The park contains gorgeous gardens and orchards. These include:
The pecan grove is wide open with rolling hills and one of the fishing ponds is behind it. The small cotton field is at the back of the park beside the Cotton Gin House and also has an active bee-hives installed beside the field. The fruit orchard contains fruit trees and grape vines. These include peach, cherry, pear, fig and apple trees as well as muscadine and scuppernong grape vines. And lastly, the Kitchen Garden is beside the Plank kitchen and serves as an herb garden for the property.
